   Hello
everyone. I hope your summer is going well. Margaret
and I got a chance to do a little traveling since the last
edition. We had a great long weekend on Mackinac Island.
We split time between the Grand Hotel and the Small Point
B&B on the other side of the island. We got a chance
to take in this magical island before all the visitors
come out in the summer. We also had a wonderful visit out to Oregon and spending time with Chris, Amanda, and our grandkids. Central Oregon is so beautiful, and it rekindles my love for that
area every time we travel out there. If you haven't visited that part of the country, I would strongly recommend it.
Bend especially with the Old Mill district and downtown is
like stepping back in time. The summer weather (being high
desert) is great with plenty of sun and no humidity.

 | July marks the last month of work at Fraser Public Schools for me as I have announced my retirement effective August 1. People have asked me 'What's next?' Well, for sure, I am taking some time off. After working full time from my senior year in high school until now, I think it is time for a break. Margaret and I will do some
traveling, then I will weigh my options. I may get back into the workforce, or I might think about getting back to my Cockroach roots and entertain and perform in some way. No matter what the future holds, I look forward with excitement on the next chapter of my life.  Needless
to say, my health is one of my concerns. This
year, MS has been quite a hindrance to me.
Weakness, fatigue, and burning nerves has been big
issues for me this past year or so. I am hopeful
that the time off will allow these symptoms to get
more under control, and I can get and feel healthy
                              again.
                               | I would
like to thank Austin and Kristina for their efforts to
raise money for MS in my name, as they biked from Duluth
to Minneapolis in June for the Bike MS - Ride Across
Minnesota. Their team raised over $1200 for Multiple
Sclerosis. I enjoyed watching their progress and photos on
Facebook over the 2 days. Thank you
also to all who worked in or submitted films for the McCarty Metro Film
Project in May. Each year, the movies get better and better, and I
really appreciate the efforts. If you haven't seen the 5
videos, you can check them out on our Dateline
News page. They all did an outstanding job! The final
thought I would like to leave you is a true story about
the famous inventor Thomas Edison. It shows that if you
have 1 person who believes in you, you can accomplish
anything. I hope you enjoy it!

STORY ABOUT THOMAS EDISON One day
a young Thomas Edison came home and gave a paper to his mother. He told her, “My teacher gave this paper to me and told me to only give it to my mother.” His mother’s eyes were tearful as she read the letter out loud to her child: Your son is a genius. This school is too small for him and doesn’t have enough good teachers for training him. Please teach him yourself. After many, many years, after Edison’s mother died and he was now one of the greatest inventors of the century, one day he was looking through old family things. Suddenly he saw a folded paper in the corner of a drawer in a desk. He took it and opened it up. On the paper was written: Your son is addled [mentally ill]. We won’t let him come to school any more. Edison cried for hours and then he wrote in his diary: “Thomas Alva Edison was an addled child that, by a hero mother, became the genius of the century.” Never Give up. Be confident. Remember – (be it life, sports, career or any competition) – any battle is won twice – FIRST IN YOUR HEAD……. |

in and inspires kids to be their best. Cheers!
