Joann Helen Murray, age 89 of Howell, passed away peacefully late Monday evening, June 17, 2019 while surrounded by her loving family. Born in Detroit on June 10, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Arthur J. and the late Emma H. (Houtteman) Schmelzer. A Howell area resident since 1971, Joann's life centered on her family and the love she had for them. She enjoyed sewing, baking, reading and had a great love for all children. She was a dogs best friend. Beloved wife of 62 years to LeRoy J. Murray whom she married in Detroit on November 7, 1953. He preceded her in death on March 3, 2016. Loving mother of Jim (Carol) Murray of Howell, Susan (Terry) Connolly of Rochester, Tom (Donna) Murray of Holland, Nancy (Kevin) Miller of Ionia, Maryann (Bob) Barnes of Royal Oak, Kathleen (Anthony) Montesanti of Howell and Kristin (Steve) Yalacki of Ionia. Proud and adoring grandmother of 19 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Sister of Margaret Lipinski of Deland, Florida, Jean McCarty of Macomb, Richard (Lois) Schmelzer of St. Clair Shores, the late Jack Schmelzer, the late Tom Schmelzer and the late Larry Schmelzer. Joann was a proud and active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, 440 E. Washington St. (at Fowler St.), Howell, where her funeral, Mass of Resurrection, celebrating her life will be held Friday, July 19, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. (visitation at church beginning 9:30 a.m.). Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Howell. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Livingston County Animal Shelter or Arbor Hospice. Please sign the family's online guest book at

.DATELINE: MAY
METRO FILM CONTEST
The
eighth annual McCarty Metro Film Project has completed.
The event took place from May 12 - May 19, 2019 and was
open to all. We were looking for people get an idea of a
film in accordance with the rules specified on May 12
which were the overall concept of time travel, and must
have included our posted phrase "I'm not talking to you
anymore", and must have included our posted object of a travel bag
or suitcase, and
must have met the 4th requirement of someone 'hitting the woah'! We
put this out on May 12 to ensure that
no films are written, shot, or edited before the beginning of our
contest. Contestants then had the next 7 days, write, act, direct
and produce a short 4 minute or less movie and submit it
to the McCarty Metro by 11:59 pm Sunday May 19. We
received 5 great film submissions. Although this year was
not a contest to be judged, we did take it out to our
readers to vote on. The popular vote went to MacDaddy's
Why... When I Was A Kid. Thank you to all the subscribers

Margaret
& Kelly McCarty took a 10 day trip out to Bend, Oregon
to visit with Chris, Amanda, Alexa, and Cooper. It was a
great trip! One of the first things was seeing Alexa's
dance recital which was awesome. Alexa did great (as you
can see by the videos below), and Chris even appeared in
one of the numbers. Chris and Amanda were able to get away
for a 10th Anniversary wedding trip down to Arizona for 4
days late in the trip. While the cats were away...
Margaret and Kelly took the grandkids to the circus, the
movie Toy Story 4, summer sports camps, the swimming pool,
taking an art class, a great bbq, nature hikes, and Margaret
even got her 'Jack In The Box' fix. Something about those
tacos she can't resist. The Michigan Mcs are looking
forward to the Bend Mcs trip to Michigan in August.

DATELINE: BIKE MS. RIDE ACROSS MINNESOTA 2019
From June 7-9, Austin and girlfriend Kristina
and their teammate rode their bikes 150 miles across Minnesota to raise money and aid research in the fight against Multiple Sclerosis. Bike MS is the largest fundraising bike series in the world. Each year, nearly 75,000 cyclists and more than 6,000 teams ride together to change the world for people with MS. Their 2 day, 150
bike ride from Duluth to Minneapolis was amazing. Austin said "We met a lot of great people and also raised money to fight the disease my father has."
Austin and Kristina dedicated their performance to
Austin's Dad Kelly, who was diagnosed with MS in 1995.
Their 3 person team raised $1265 from donors in the event.

Dear Editor: You and the other McCartys have been known to shoot off a few fireworks for the Fourth of July. Based on your experience, what are the biggest safety tips that can give Metro readers? -Oooh-aaaah, Hudsonville, Mich.

NOTE: This is a great question as almost 10,000 Americans are injured by fireworks each year. Of these injuries, 64 percent take place between June 22-July 22.
But... The biggest safety tip I can offer to our
readers... Remember. 90% of all people are caused by accidents.
Dear Editor: Fifty years ago (July 1969) Apollo 11 landed on the moon and Neil Armstrong walked on the surface. But this only was possible thanks to the many rocket pioneering efforts, including Mike McCarty's 1960 launch of a bumblebee into space from the alley behind 9323 Sussex in Detroit. Except for the 2015 documentary "Killer Bee-hemoth vs. the Mysterious Stone Thrower," why was Mr. McCarty's pioneering accomplishment overlooked?

space... or Smylnycky's backyard), sending kids through the
rickets on Sussex (astronaut training), and Bob's famous

walk are much higher in the consideration for noted
accomplishment in the field of space and exploration.
Dear Editor: In reading last month’s edition, I learned about the first editor of The McCarty Metro. He published the Metro from under the basement steps at his home. In that same edition, I was reading a section called “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles” and found it interesting that you listed the origination of each person who attended A Toast to Jerry...except for him. Is he still residing under his parent’s basement steps and was too embarrassed to come forth with this information? -Looking for the

Sussex. I believe if he were a wrestler, they would just
announce him being "From Parts Unknown", and leave
it at that.
Dear Editor: My oldest brother has been doing medical role play to help train upcoming doctors and nurses. My brother must be an awesome actor to portray these crucial diseases, so I decided to view his movie entry on the McCarty Metro Film Challenge. Based on this film entry, should I be concerned for the future of medicine in America?

Garlic Mushroom Chicken Thighs submitted by Gina
INGREDIENTS
For
the Chicken:
1-1/2 lbs boneless
skinless chicken thighs (around 6-8 filets) 1 teaspoon each onion
powder and garlic powder ½ teaspoon each of
dried thyme and rosemary ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon cracked
black pepper 2 Tablespoons olive oil
For the Sauce:
1 Tablespoon butter 8 ounces sliced brown mushrooms 4 cloves garlic, minced (or 1 Tbls minced garlic) 1 Tablespoon fresh chopped parsley ½ - 1 teaspoon each of dried thyme and dried rosemary (adjust to taste)
DIRECTIONS
Pat
chicken thighs dry with paper towel and trim off excess
fat.Combine
onion powder, garlic powder, herbs, salt and pepper.
Coat the chicken evenly with the combined seasoning.
Heat 1 Tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over
medium-high heat and sear chicken thighs in batches
until browned on each side and no longer pink in center
(about 8 minutes each side, depending on thickness).Add remaining oil if needed for second batch.Transfer to a plate; set aside and keep warm. To
the same skillet, melt the butter and add the mushrooms.Season with salt and pepper and cook until soft
(about 3 minutes).Add
the garlic, parsley, thyme and rosemary; sauté until
fragrant (about 1 minute). Return chicken to the pan.Taste test and season with salt and pepper to
your taste.Garnish
with fresh parsley.Serve
immediately. Recipes serves 6.

Utica Michigan
residents Morris Johnson and his wife Esther went to the
Michigan State Fair every year, and every year Morris would say, "Esther, I'd like to ride in that helicopter."
Esther always replied, "I know Morris, but that helicopter ride is fifty dollars, and fifty dollars is fifty dollars."
One year Esther and Morris went to the fair and Morris said, "Esther, I'm 85 years old. If I don't ride that helicopter now, I might never get another chance."
To this, Esther replied, "Morris that helicopter ride is fifty dollars and fifty dollars is fifty dollars."
It was a slow day so the pilot overhearing the couple said
"Folks... I'll take the both of you for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and not say a word, I won't charge you! But if you say one word, it's fifty dollars."
Morris and Esther agreed and up they went. The pilot did all kinds of
fancy maneuvers, but not a word was heard. He did his daredevil tricks over and over again, but still not a word.
When they landed, the pilot turned to Morris and said, "By golly, I did everything I could to get you to yell out, but you didn't. I'm impressed!"
Morris replied, "Well, to tell you the truth, I almost said something when Esther fell out, but you know, fifty dollars is fifty dollars!"
