Hello Metro readers. Thanks for taking the time to read the McCarty Metro. This month marks my 26th year as your editor. I want to thank all who have contributed articles, advice, or those who complimented me in this endeavor. A special thanks to Jerry and Mike who have always contributed faithfully in every edition that has been put out over the past 26 years. I also would like to thank my late brother DJ, who did the same while he was alive. Finally, these editions are exceptional because of my wife and m'lady, Margaret, who has helped me edit every issue that has been put out (otherwise there would be too many mistakes, errors, and maybe 1 or 2 too many potty jokes). All of you have helped not only in the writing of the Metro, but also for creating so many great additions that their are too many to count. I am so lucky to be able to have always count on, and love all of my brothers and their significant others both in helping with the Metro, and in my life.

Our NFL Pigskin Pickem Game has started. If you still want in, you can go to the Pickem Page and make your picks this week. It really is a fun way to keep the NFL games exciting to watch.

Also, we have our second annual Pumpkin Carving / Decorating Contest this month. Just send me a photo of your creation, and our subscribers will vote for the winner. I look forward to seeing what our readers can come up with.

Our Metro Las Vegas trip is scheduled for January 17-20. If interested, let us know. We always have a great time out in Sin City.

Margaret and I had a great visit with Gene and Dolores Skladnowski this past month. Gene was adopted at birth, but DNA confirms he is a McCarty. He is a great guy, and if anyone would like to take him up on his DNA offer (he'll pay for the test), let us know at mccartymetro@gmail.com. So far, Uncle Bill's, Uncle Vince's, and my family have participated and show Gene as a cousin.

I want to take a minute and acknowledge my brother and Cockroach band mate Jerry McCarty. I also consider him someone I look up to, and also my hero. Although battling cancer, he made a commitment to Family Promise, an organization serving homeless families in the Santa Clarita Valley area to emcee their Box City event and fundraiser on September 29. Although in a lot of pain, doing chemotherapy, going through weekly blood and platelet transfusions, and getting out of the hospital the same day of the event after a bout of pneumonia, Jerry kept his word and emceed the event. He is one of the strongest and bravest people I know, and I hope all of our readers say a prayer and send good thoughts and wishes for Jerry to beat cancer. Also prayers of strength and thanks for his loved ones who are taking on this battle with Jerry. Thank you Kathlene, Dana and Evan for staying strong as well, and taking good care of my brother. I love you all, and you are in our prayers.

Speaking of heroes, Veterans Day is November 11, and in honor of it, I would like everyone to thank a military veteran either active or non active. Also, give thanks and say a prayer for those who are no longer with us. Those men and women are all heroes as well, and unfortunately, far too many will say otherwise. God bless the men and women who have fought for our right to view the wrong people as heroes, and thank God for the people who know better.

Again, I want to thank you all for stopping by and reading. I hope you enjoy each edition of the McCarty Metro as much as I enjoy bringing it to you each month. With Thanksgiving right around the corner, the final thought I want to leave you with is a story about how we should all give thanks each in our own special way. Enjoy!

GIVING THANKS IN A RESTAURANT

I took my children to a restaurant, and my six-year-old son asked if he could give thanks. As we bowed our heads he said, "God is good, God is great. Thank you for the food, and I would even thank you more if Mom gets us ice cream for dessert. And Liberty and justice for all! Amen!"

Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby, I heard a woman remark, "That's what's wrong with this country. Kids today don't even know how to pray. Asking God for ice cream! Why, I never!"

Hearing this, my son burst into tears and asked me, "Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?" As I held him and assured him that he had done a terrific job, and God was certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentleman approached the table.

He winked at my son and said, "I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer." "Really?" my son asked. "Cross my heart," the man replied.

Then, in a theatrical whisper, he added (indicating the woman whose remark had started this whole thing), "Too bad she never asks God for ice cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes."

Naturally, I bought my kids ice cream at the end of the meal. My son stared at his for a moment, and then did something I will remember the rest of my life. He picked up his sundae and, without a word, walked over and placed it in front of the woman. With a big smile he told her, "Here, this is for you. Ice cream is good for the soul sometimes; and my soul is good already."

The End

Here's to always giving thanks, loving others, and even a little ice cream for the soul ... Cheers!
