My Dilemma: Blues or Bluegrass ?

As you can see by this month’s song, the blues is winning over my interest. I’m learning to play “Boom Boom” in Hooker’s guitar style. And I love the Steve Ray Vaughn –ish licks in a version of the “12 Bar Blues.” But just when it looks like bluegrass is a lost cause, I pick up the banjo and find a cool lick or, today, played in a bluegrass  jam near Kalamazoo and reeled off a good “Wildwood Flower.” So, what to do?

The answer, play blues AND grass, and hope there’s a song the two can merge.  I want to experiment  and see if I can introduce some bluesy banjo to Clapton’s “San Francisco Bay Blues.” Or maybe try it the other way around and add some bluesy guitar to bluegrass staple, “The Salty Dog Blues.” Also, if anybody has ideas for mixing blues and bluegrass, please send ‘em to the McCarty Metro, attn. Mike’s Blues and Bluegrass Page.

Boom Boom
by John Lee Hooker

Key of E, baby

Boom boom boom boom
I'm gonna shoot you right down,
right offa your feet
Take you home with me,
put you in my house
Boom boom boom boom
A-haw haw haw haw
Hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm
Hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm

I love to see you strut,
up and down the floor
When you talking to me,
that baby talk
I like it like that
Whoa, yeah!
Talk that talk, walk that walk

When she walk that walk,
and talk that talk,
and whisper in my ear,
tell me that you love me
I love that talk
When you talk like that,
you knocks me out,
right off of my feet
Hoo hoo hoo
Talk that talk, and walk that walk
