DATELINE: BEND OREGON SOUTH LITTLE LEAGUE
By Chris McCarty

On Thursday, July 27, our Bend South Minors baseball season ended with a 4-0 loss in the State Championship game to Murrayhill. The season started five months ago and was an incredible experience from start to finish. I was fortunate enough to manage this All Star team and our regular season team to a combined record of 20-4-1, which included a league championship (Go Mets!), a district 5 championship and a State of Oregon runner-up finish.
.

I learned so much from all the coaches I was able to coach with (and against). I'm most proud of the player development I saw on our regular season team. We had some kids new to baseball who struggled to catch and throw but by the end of the season they had moved up into the middle of our lineup during our biggest games.

After not making the All Star team last season, Cooper made the team this season after hitting .763 during the regular season with 4 HR, 5 2B and 9 3B! He continued to hit in the All Star tournaments, hitting .500 for the post-season with a .654 On-base pct. He pitched 3 and 2/3 huge innings for us in the state tournament closing out two games while striking out 7. I'm so proud of his effort and attitude this season.

It was really fun to be able to share with with other friends and family members. So many texts of congratulations and encouragement to me and the team, it really was an incredible experience.

Thanks to all the players, coaches and families who made this an unforgettable season.

Finally, huge thanks to Amanda Westfall McCarty & Alexa for all their support, understanding and sacrifices this season.

Memories for a lifetime...

DATELINE: SESAME PLACE, PENNSYLVANIA

Kelly & Margaret took a 5 day, 4 night road trip with 2 of their grandchildren Olivia and Gray to Sesame Place just outside of Philadelphia, PA. On Tuesday, the first day, our group drove to Cuyahoga National Park in Ohio, where we walked some nature trails, and saw the sights in and around the park. The 4 of us got in some pool time and had a nice dinner and spent the night in a hotel just outside the park.

Cuyahoga National Park outside of Akron featured nature, bridges, and a vintage gas station with vintage pumps

On Wednesday, we drove to Philadelphia. We got to the hotel and were able to get some swimming in and had dinner. That evening, some issues presented themselves. We were supposed to go to Sesame Place all day Thursday, but the weatherman said it was supposed to rain the entire day. So we changed our plans. On Thursday, Margaret found an indoor amusement center named Giggleberry Fair where we spent several hours having fun with the girls. There were rides, games, and even a 4-story playscape called Giggleberry Mountain. One of the best lines from our trip was when 7 year old Gray came out of Giggleberry Mountain, and was asked how was it. She replied "Chaotic!". Back at the hotel, we got some more pool time and had dinner.

A little swimming followed by some fun at Giggle Fair
.
Lots of fun in the Giggle Arcade and Giggle Mountain. There were also several huge sand castles outside getting eroded by the rain.

Friday was a sunny and hot day, so we went to Sesame place. The park had a lot of rides, characters of Sesame Street walking around, and also a waterpark which Margaret and the kids enjoyed. I was still nursing a dislocated shoulder so I did not dare go on any of the rides. We spent the better part of the day there and left in the afternoon for the long trip home. We made it to the eastern part of PA were we got our last hotel on the trip.

Can you tell me how to get to Sesame Place?

More fun with these 3 daredevils
And who doesn't love Elmo, The Count, and Ice Cream?

On Saturday, we drove the rest of the way home. It was a great trip to take and Sesame Place did not disappoint. Thank you to Karen S. for the tickets to the park. We had a blast.

Clean The Stainless Steel Around Your House With Cream Of Tartar

You thought cream of tartar is only good for stabilizing whipped egg whites, and acting as a leavening agent for baked goods, right? Did you know that you could use it to make your stainless steel sparkle? You just have to mix it with a bit of water to clean stainless steel. It will clean off any grit and make it look new.

Dear Editor: Please stop delivery of my McCarty Metro on Sept. 22 and resume it on Sept. 29. I don't want Metro papers piling up on my porch while I am away on vacation. Thank you. -MM, Hudsonville, Mich.

ED NOTE: You are aware this is an online newsletter, don't you??? Anyway, I hope you have better weather on your vacation than mine was. It was raining cats and dogs in Pennsylvania a couple of weeks ago. On the bright side, at least it wasn't hailing taxicabs!

Dear Editor: What are the chances that Metro reporters will walk off the job in support of striking Hollywood writers and actors? -Metro reader, Hollywood, CA

ED NOTE: The striking Hollywood writers have become so lazy. In fact, they are just remaking the last writers strike. Speaking of strikes, the doctors at our local hospital are now on strike. I'm not really sure why. I guess the Metro will have to get a pharmacist over so they can read what they wrote on their picket signs.

Dear Editor: I always love reading The McCarty Metro. I don't know half of the McCartys, but I love seeing them. Of course I know all you guys. I have something I read and thought is was funny and I thought I would send it to you... A lady walked into a woman's bathroom stall and laughed as she closed the door... On the back of the door was a sign that said "Don't flush paper towels, sanitary products, or your dreams down the toilet." -Kitty

Ed Note: That's funny! I also saw one by the men's urinal that said, "Players with short bats please stand closer to the plate!" All the best!

Dear Editor: My letter is referencing last month's edition of Jerry's World. Normally I'm not one to complain, but I have to question the integrity of this paper. Just what kind of paper are you runnin' here where you show a young boy enjoying himself straddled over a lawn sprinkler?!! I thought this was an article about having good clean fun in the neighborhood amongst the kiddos. Who is this kid anyway? Gotta be one of those McCarty boys. It's just like them to behave that way. The article was well-written but the picture of choice was not well-chosen. Just sayin'... -Shocked and Disturbed

PS... my husband says to sign this "Schweaty Balls"

ED NOTE: Your letter is just like my neighbor who leaves their sprinklers running constantly every day from morning until night. I find It's really irrigating. Seriously though, it must be nice to have a fancy schmancy pool instead of us poor people who have to get their jollies running through sprinklers, and then actually having to run in the house to go pee. Oh... And I hope you weren't offended when I sat facing the jets in the hot tub in Frankenmuth!

BBQ CHICKEN PINWHEELS
.
INGREDIENTS:

8 ounces (1 package) cream cheese softened
1 cup (4 ounces) grated mozzarella cheese
½ cup barbecue sauce
2 cups diced chicken
8 ounces bacon cooked and diced
½ cup packed chopped fresh cilantro leaves
½ cup finely chopped red onion (optional)
1 teaspoon garlic salt
Freshly ground black pepper to taste
4 burrito-sized 10-inch flour tortillas

DIRECTIONS:

In a large bowl, combine cream cheese, mozzarella, barbecue sauce, diced chicken, bacon, cilantro, onion (if using), garlic salt, and pepper until well-blended. Smooth the top of the cream cheese mixture in the bowl and use a butter knife to mark an "X" over the surface, thereby dividing it into equal fourths. Scoop ¼ of the mixture out of the bowl and spread it over the entire surface of a tortilla. Roll up tightly. Repeat with the other three tortillas. Wrap each roll in plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm, at least 1 hour up to overnight. Use a sharp knife to cut rolls into ½-inch slices and serve.

Please Note: Since BBQ Chicken Pizza traditionally features a fairly sweet barbecue sauce, I bought an all-natural Kansas City-style sauce for this recipe (to determine the sweetest sauce, I basically compared the nutrition labels and went for the highest grams of sugar -- ha). If you prefer a more savory BBQ flavor, you may certainly use any type of BBQ sauce that you like. And of course, if you have homemade BBQ sauce on hand, it can't be beat! Also, I used leftover rotisserie chicken for my pinwheels (½ of a rotisserie chicken = 2 cups diced chicken), but any cooked, diced chicken will do.

.

Dear Pepe: When a recipe calls for pepper, how do I know when to use ground pepper versus cracked pepper? -Diane

Pepe: Thanks for your question. Finely ground pepper (the kind that looks like dust) is best used for things like sauces. It's pretty strong, and a little goes a long way. Coarse ground pepper, on the other hand, is best for finishing dishes at the table or seasoning proteins. It adds a burst of flavor to anything you add it to.
