Grandpa and Grandma (Mike and Karen) visited Maryland recently to see Andy, Ann and Sam. Oh, and Nitro, too. Mike reports that Sam is making great strides -- well, great crawls, anyway -- in the transportation department. Using his commando crawl while we were there in July, Sam mastered the step that kept him confined to the living room. He left the step in his dust and crawled into the dining room, past the kitchen and made it to the front door, where he beamed at his success and watched the people and cars outside. Sam has a milestone coming up. He will be 1 year old Sept. 20.

Sam shows his Olympic form in the step vault.

Success! Sam was never at the front door before.

Several Mackenzie High grads (Class of '67) and spouses got together recently at Tee-Bonz in Fenton. A number of them also went to George Ford Elementary at Marlowe and West Chicago. The alumni from Sussex included John Karalis, June (Jozwiak) Ventimiglia and Mike McCarty. Ken Chalk was there to represent Whitcomb. Other alumni at the event: Brad Mathers, Pam (Dugas) Fair, Mike Dakesian, Linda A
ja (Smith), Janice Glowinski, Phil Neal and Dan Ventimiglia. It was a great time. Lots of memories and catching up. And there already are plans in the works for another reunion next year, which will be the -- gasp! -- 40th anniversary of our graduation from George Ford. Later, two people who couldn't make it to the reunion -- Steve Truman and Bill Schmidt -- met with former MSU roomates Mike Dakesian and Mike McCarty. The event was a bbq at Schmiddy's in Grand Ledge. Great time. Check out the reunion page.

A massive power blackout Thursday, Aug. 14, affected people from New York City up into Lansing, Mich. But the McCartys were ready. The Detroit area was hit hard, but two back-to-back streets in Utica, Mich., did not lose lights or air conditioning or anything. "We put our backup plan into action," an anonymous neighbor told The Metro. "Mrs. McCarty's stationary bike is running our neighborhood's backup generator. We would thank her personally but she is still pedaling and can't answer the door." Metro Editor Kelly McCarty reported the online newspaper met its deadline and didn't face electrical problems. "I have a boatload of D batteries under the steps," he beamed. "About the only problem I had was Mike's late articles." When it got dark later Thursday, Steve McCarty said he relied on penlight batteries and Megan's glow-in-the-dark toy necklaces. The Metro phoned Inspector Rick McCarty on Thursday night, but he declined comment until he could clear his statement with the commissioner. "Just a minute," Inspector McCarty said before saying goodbye, "Kevin, no, you can't take my flashlight to your 10 p.m. football practice."
