DATELINE: DAYCATION X3

To scratch their travel itch being cognizant of the health risks during COVID, Kelly & Margaret took a 4 day / 3 night trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Day 1 of the trip was to Mackinaw City where they saw the sights, lighthouses, and shopped. Even driving around the tip of the mitten. On day 2, they crossed the Mackinac Bridge and traveled up to Sault Ste. Marie for lunch and see the Soo Locks. They continued across the UP to the Crisp Point Lighthouse on Lake Superior, and then spent the night in Munising. They started their 3rd day with scouting out the sights in the area, and scheduled a ferry boat ride to tour the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. On the final day, the pair drove home, stopping at the Ponderosa Steak House in West Branch (I do miss Ponderosa!)

The couple also took 2 other daycation car trips this past month. They went to Saugatuck, Michigan and were able to take a big paddle-wheel boat on the Kalamazoo River to the mouth of Lake Michigan. The following week, Kelly & Margaret went to Three Rivers Michigan where they met Austin and Kristina and her parents. They all had a nice, relaxing ride on their pontoon boat around Long Lake where Mo & Metra live, followed by a tasty lunch on their porch overlooking the lake. It was a great visit and it was terrific meeting Kristina's parents who were wonderful hosts for the day. Below are some pictures.

DATELINE: METRO HEADQUARTERS

I just picked up my newest social distance support animal! Maybe now people will know we are in a pandemic and take this more serious, and stop infringing on my personal space while I am doing my mall walking.

Two animal rights protesters were protesting at the cruelty of sending pigs to a slaughterhouse in Bonn, Germany. Suddenly the pigs, all two thousand of them, escaped through a broken fence and stampeded, trampling the two hapless protesters to death.

DATELINE: LOS ANGELES, CA

Frank Perkins of Los Angeles made an attempt on the world flagpole sitting record. By the time he had come down, eight hours short of the 400 day record, his sponsor had gone bust, his girlfriend had left him and his phone and electricity had been cut off.

DATELINE: BRUSSELS, BELGIUM

Belgians looking for a different culinary experience will once again be able to eat 50 meters (164 feet) above the ground as the dining-in-the-sky experience returns from COVID-19 lockdown with a new, socially distanced feel.

Belgium-based ' Dinner in the Sky', which has already been set up in some 60 countries since its 2006 launch, involves diners strapped into seats at a table suspended from a crane while well-known chefs cook and serve from the center.

Their original platform sat 22 people together along the perimeter, but in the COVID-19 era, up to 32 diners will now reserve four-person private tables spaced apart from. The chefs and servers also have a little more space to roam.

“It means all the public are sitting in sort of a bubble,” said co-CEO Stefan Kerkhof at the crane base in the Belgian capital.

Dinner in the Sky offers three sittings - for lunch and two for dinner over the coming two weeks. The price is 295 euros ($350) per head or 150 euros for weekend afternoon cocktails.

Dear Editor: Do you have any tips or personal insights on how trick-or-treaters can stay safe and protect their bags of candy? -Waiting for the Big Night

ED NOTE: WOW! Are you asking the wrong guy!!! Remember the 1971 debacle of me getting my bag stolen??? But, since you asked, I did learn a few Halloween safety tricks from the movies... While trick or treating, if your friends suddenly begin to exhibit uncharacteristic behavior such as hissing, fascination for blood, glowing eyes, and so on, you should kill them immediately. If you're running from would be attacker, expect to trip or fall down at least twice, more if you are female. Also note that, despite the fact that you are running and the assailant is merely shambling along, he's still moving fast enough to catch up with you. Next, beware of houses where the people are bearing tools. IE: chainsaws, staple guns, hedge trimmers, electric carving knives, combines, lawnmowers, butane torches, soldering irons, or band saws. And finally, dress appropriately. If you hear strange noises in an old house, women should not wear a flimsy negligee. And, PLEASE... Carry a flashlight... Not a candle!

Dear Editor: Thank you for posting the touching McCarty Chronicles video in September's Metro. "Paddle Ball Bob" had me in tears... of laughter. Is the pledge drive offer at the end of the video still valid? It was eerie how much Jerry McCarty sounded like Charles Kurault. -Hoping for More Chronicles in Hudsonville

ED NOTE: Unfortunately, that particular pledge drive is long over... However, our new one is going on now. If you make a $1000 pledge today, as a thank you, you will receive a Brad Savage & The Cockroaches 45rpm record, a used McCarty Metro t-shirt size 3xl, a personalized "Leave My House" Tik-Tok message from Audri, and a 'YOU DON'T KNOW THAT!' answering machine message from me... Oh yeah... and a big hug and kiss from Metro reporter Mike. BUT WAIT!!! If you pledge within the next hour, you can also receive one of the t-shirts below that I and a few friends had made up while we was over at the KofC council enjoying a few beverages. I hope to hear from your bank soon.

ED NOTE: I appreciate you stopping by. I would like to hear your questions, comments, or editorials.
