DATELINE: 48 HOUR FILM PROJECT - NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE
The 48 Hour Film Project is a wild and sleepless weekend in which you and a team make a movie—write, shoot, edit and score it—in just 48 hours. Larry McCarty & Gina Deakins entered their new Happy Hair Productions into the event. Basically, the event works like this.... On Friday night, you get a character, a prop, a line of dialogue and a genre, all to include in your movie. 48 hours later, the movie must be complete. Then it will show at a local theater the next week.In 2010, nearly 40,000 filmmakers made 3,000 films in 80 cities on five continents. This year, we're even bigger, with filmmakers around the world taking the challenge to make a 7 minute film in just 48 hours.

The Mission Of The 48 Hour Film Project is to advance filmmaking and promote filmmakers. Through its festival competition, the Project encourages filmmakers and would-be filmmakers to get out there and make movies. The tight deadline of 48 hours puts the focus squarely on the filmmakers, emphasizing creativity and teamwork skills. While the time limit places an unusual restriction on the filmmakers, it is also liberating by putting an emphasis on "doing" instead of "talking."

Congratulations to PIZZA actor Chris Jastrow won Honorable Mention for the category of Best Supporting Actor. The Metro asked Larry McCarty what was toughest part about this project? Larry replied... "The 48 hours wasn't the problem, it was editing my time from a 2 hour VHS tape to 7 minutes."

DATELINE: METRO TRIPS

There were a few trips in the family recently. First, Kelly & Steve made a recon mission out to Vegas Baby Vegas. The temps were hot, and the tables were hotter. Although Steve had to attend seminars while in Sin City, Kelly enjoyed the sun and fun of the Las Vegas casinos. Jerry also joined the two for a day.

Kelly & Margaret took a week off to travel to Oregon and visit with Chris, Amanda, and Alexa. We flew to Portland, and on the first day, drove to several beautiful waterfalls, and went up Larch Mountain. Larch Mountain is an extinct volcano near Portland, Oregon. The two hike up to Sherrard Point where there is an outstanding view of nearby Mount Hood, Mount Adams, Mount Jefferson, Mount Rainier and Mount St. Helens.

The two made it to Bend, Oregon to finally see the grandbaby. Alexa was primed and ready for the visit, breaking out a nice smile for Grandma McCarty. The grandparents got to take nice walks with Alexa (who show the old fogies where the hot spots were). All in all, it was a wonderful vacation. The weather was perfect all week, and the hospitality was wonderful. A Christmas trip is being planned.

DATELINE: DETROIT, MICHIGAN
Austin McCarty purchased 4 tickets for a rare Detroit concert given by Sir Paul McCartney on July 24 at Comerica Park. It was a long show (he's got 50 years of music to choose from). In addition to all the good ones, he also did a tribute to George Harrison and John Lennon in which he teared up. All in all, it was a GREAT show as he played many of our favorites including Beatles classics as well as Wings hits and solo songs. Joel (Austins friend) said in the car on the way there that he hoped he played Helter Skelter... AND HE DID. The evening finished by gambling at Greektown Casino and everyone won. Thanks Austin for a fun night.

Congratulations to Metro reader Dan Dohring who was recently promoted to Sergeant in the Clinton Township Police Department.

Congratulations to Metro reader Chrissy Komrska and her husband on their new baby boy Jack born on August 15, measuring 20" and weighing 8 lbs 9oz.

On August 4, 2011, the McCarty Metro's own Jerry McCarty appeared on a radio talk show in California called The Real Side with Joe Messina. Joe had Jerry, who is a Professor of Economics at Woodbury University, on for the second half of his hour long talk show. The two discussed the current Eonomic Crisis facing this nation. Jer made some very good points, and even got a plug in for the McCarty Metro.

You can listen to a taped copy of the Real Side talk show from radio station KHTS http://www.therealside.com/podcasts. Go to the August 4th podcast, and forward to the second half of the hour long show.

In the photo to the right, the Professor (Jer) and some other faculty at Woodbury get together to celebrate the interview. The Dean of the University says the only thing that would have made it better is if it was a 3 hour show... A 3 HOUR SHOW?

It's also with great sadness we announce Aunt Nan (Anna) Schmelzer lost her fight with cancer on Tuesday, July 19, 2011. God has called her to be with her husband of 50 years, Uncle Larry. She will be greatly missed by her daughters, Gina and Teri (Bill) and Julie and grandchildren, Shayne, Kellie, Sam and Kevin. Aunt Nan touched so many people through her years working at Maloof Jewelry & Gifts and through her volunteer work with the St. Clair Shores Activities Committee. She was known throughout the Shores for her sense of humor, kind hearted spirit and dedication to children. Her love of children and tireless works helped make The Halloween in the Park and Fireworks, just to name a couple of huge successes! Her willingness to always go above and beyond earned her a Proclamation for dedication to volunteer service from the City of St. Clair Shores in 2009. If wealth were measured by how much one loves and is loved, than Nan was one of the richest people in the world! Her first and foremost priority was her children and grandchildren. Aunt Nan taught all of us how to live life to the fullest.

Driving around, I saw a sign in front of a broken down shanty-style house: 'Talking Dog For Sale'. I rang the bell and the owner appeared and told me the dog was in the backyard. I proceeded into the backyard and saw a nice looking Labrador retriever sitting there.

'You talk?' I asked.... 'Yep,' the Lab replied.

After I recovered from the shock of hearing a dog talk, I said 'So, what's your story?' The Lab looked up and said, 'Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA. In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping.' 'I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running, but the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger so I decided to settle down I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security, wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a batch of medals.' 'I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I'm just retired.'

I was amazed and went back in and asked the owner how much he wanted for the dog.

'Ten dollars,' the guy said.

'Ten dollars? This dog is amazing! Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?'

'Because he's a liar. He never did any of that crap!
