  • DATELINE VALENCIA, CALIFORNIA
Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie are in Valencia filming their latest season of “The Simple Life”. This season, they are portraying mothers in the same Valencia neighborhood that Jerry and Kathlene live in. Nicole Richie already has caused a stir by speaking profanity to an 11 year old boy playing basketball in the neighborhood. It’s the most profanity heard in Valencia since Rick McCarty visited Jerry and got in a fight playing basketball in the neighborhood and asked a Valencia resident, “ Do you want to !#&%$ dance!”

  • DATELINE AUGUSTA, MICHIGAN
The coveted green jacket will be up for grabs once again at Gull Lake XXI. It is only four months away the dates this year are May 10,11 and 12th. The prices have not changed from last year. The 3 days of golf two night lodging package is $212.46 including tax, plus the per person cart fee of $14.00 per 18 or a total of $70.00. Mike Wiacek has made the reservation for 16 players once again. He must give a one month notice to make any changes. Everyone seemed to enjoy the switch to more scramble golf which will continue again this year. Closest to the pin must make birdie will continue in scramble play. Long drive needs work......., too much whiskey is consumed to understand the rules. I think the putt off has to become a tradition. http://www.gulllakeview.com/

  • DATELINE LUKE AIR FORCE BASE, ARIZONA
A certain lieutenant colonel at Luke AFB deserves a big pat on the back. Apparently, an individual who lives somewhere near Luke AFB wrote the local paper complaining about a group of F-16s that disturbed his/her day at the mall. When that individual read the response from a Luke AFB officer, it must have stung quite a bit. The complaint: "Question of the day for Luke Air Force Base: Whom do we thank for the morning air show? Last Wednesday, at precisely 9:11 a.m, a tight formation of four F-16 jets made a low pass over Arrowhead Mall, continuing west over Bell Road at approximately 500 feet. Imagine our good fortune! Do the Tom Cruise-wannabes feel we need this wake-up call, or were they trying to impress the cashiers at Mervyns' early-bird special? Any response would be appreciated." The response: Regarding "A wake-up call from Luke's jets" (Letters, Thursday): On June 15, at precisely 9:12 a.m., a perfectly timed four-ship flyby of F-16s from the 63rd Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base flew over the grave of Capt Jeremy Fresques. Capt. Fresques was an Air Force officer who was previously stationed at Luke Air Force Base and was killed in Iraq on May 30, Memorial Day. At 9 a.m. on June 15, his family and friends gathered at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City to mourn the loss of a husband, son and friend. Based on the letter writer's recount of the flyby, and because of the jet noise, I'm sure you didn't hear the 21-gun salute, the playing of taps, or my words to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques as I gave them their son's flag on behalf of the President of the United States and all those veterans and servicemen and women who understand the sacrifices they have endured A four-ship flyby is a display of respect the Air Force pays to those who give their lives in defense of freedom. We are professional aviators and take our jobs seriously, and on June 15 what the letter writer witnessed was four officers lining up to pay their ultimate respects. The letter writer asks, "Whom do we thank for the morning air show?" The 56th Fighter Wing will call for you, and forward your thanks to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques, and thank them for you, for it was in their honor that my pilots flew the most honorable formation of their lives.

  • DATELINE BELLEVIEW
Jim Smith and Edna Johnson were both mental patients in Belleview. Last Saturday, while they were walking past the hospital swimming pool, Jim suddenly jumped into the deep end. He sank to the bottom of the pool and stayed there. Edna promptly jumped in to save him. She swam to the bottom and pulled Jim out. When the director of Nursing, Sheila Bennett, became aware of Edna's heroic act, she considered her to be mentally stable. When she went to tell Edna the news she said, "Edna, I have good news and bad news. The good news is you're being discharged; since you were able to rationally respond to a crisis by jumping in and saving the life of another patient, I have concluded that your act displays sound mindedness. The bad news is that Jim, the patient you saved, hung himself in his bathroom with the belt of his robe right after you saved him. I am sorry, but he's dead." Edna replied, "He didn't hang himself, I put him there to dry. How soon can I go home?"

  • DATELINE MULCH BUYERS
If you use mulch around your house be very careful about buying mulch this year. After the hurricane in New Orleans
many trees were blown over. These trees were then turned into mulch and the state is trying to get rid of tons and tons of this mulch to any state or company who will come and haul it away. So it will be showing up in Home Depot and Lowes at dirt cheap prices with one huge problem; Formosan Termites will be the bonus in many of those bags. New Orleans is one of the few areas in the country were the Formosan Termites has gotten a strong hold and most of the trees blown down were already badly infested with those termites. Now we may have the worst case of transporting a problem to all parts of the country that we have ever had. These termites can eat a house in no time at all and we have no good control against them, so tell your friends that own homes to avoid cheap mulch and know were it came from. http://www.agctr.lsu.edu/en/environment/insects/Termites/formosan_termites/

  • DATELINE TELEPHONE SCAM
I received a telephone call last evening from an individual identifying himself as an AT&T Service technician who was conducting a test on telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test I should touch nine(9), zero(0), the pound sign (#), and then hang up. Luckily, I was suspicious and refused. Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing 90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which enables them to place long distance calls billed to your home phone number. I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many local jails/prisons I have also verified this information with UCB Telecom,Pacific Bell, MCI, Bell Atlantic and GTE. Please beware. DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE. The GTE Security Department requested that I share this information with EVERYONE I KNOW. After checking with Verizon they said it was true, so do not dial (9),zero(0), the pound sign # and hang up for anyone.

  • A BLAST FROM THE PAST
Back 20 years ago or so, I had the opportunity to purchase songs from various recording artists. OK... I passed on purchasing The Beatles music, because Michael Jackson drove up the price, but I was able to purchase all the music written and performed by Sanxuary back in the early 1980's for a ... pardon the expression... a song and a dance. Here is a copy of the original composition of "SPEECHLESS". A true classic. You can also download the file.
